Sasha is the lead researcher for Niche Unity.
Sasha is an independent researcher and consultant with over 14 years of experience in the field of sustainable development and climate change and 7 years experience in international development programme evaluations. She has a strong interest in building resilience to climate change, sustainable food systems, food sovereignty, agroecology and ecological building. She has among other worked for the United Nations as a climate change researcher and implementation support advisor, the University of Cape Town’s Energy Research Centre to support mitigation planning, the South African Sustainability Institute on greening the urban sector and the food/energy/water nexus in developing economies, the African Centre for Biodiversity to research the “Big agri” push in Africa and issues of food/seed sovereignty, Groundswell International and the Alliance for food Sovereignity in Africa (AFSA) to support their work on agroecology, the World Council of Churches to research the impact of the financialization of food in Africa.
She is actively engaged in supporting the South African Organic Sector organisation (SAOSO), notably through supporting the emergence and sound management of Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) to ensure organic food production systems. She is also the co-founder of the GMO & Poison free zones of South Africa.
Sasha is also skilled in programme management, organizational change, facilitation, translation and interpretation (English/French).
Sasha holds a Master’s degree in Geopolitics and Political Science from the Sorbonne University in Paris (Major in project evaluation), as well as an M.Phil in Sustainable Development Management from the Sustainability Institute (Stellenbosch University). She lives off-grid on a smallholding in the Garden Route with her family and farms dairy goats organically.
